About Us

Doughty’s is an almshouse, founded in 1687, providing 57 modern, self-contained flats for older people. Residents can choose to use various supporting services to help them, according to their needs, to continue to live independently for as long as possible.

Our Origins

It was originally called ‘Doughty’s Hospital’ but we dropped the word ‘Hospital’ as many people found it confusing. Doughty’s is not a hospital in the modern sense of the word – it has no nursing or medical services. The origin of the word ‘hospital’ is the Latin word ‘hospes’ meaning a guest, as in the use ‘hospitality’. This was relevant in former times because ‘hospitals’ or almshouses used to provide ‘alms’ for destitute people, giving them shelter, food and water. The Great Hospital, also in Norwich, is one of the oldest and most famous almshouses in the United Kingdom, founded in 1249.

Doughty’s purpose

“To enable residents to enjoy a high quality of life, living independently in their own home for as long as possible.”

We will strive to help residents to achieve this by:

a. Providing easy access to high quality practical and moral support and, if and when necessary, direct care
b. Providing a high quality, well-maintained, safe and secure physical environment
c. Providing opportunities for stimulation through social contact and activities
d. Respecting the individuality and dignity of each and every resident, irrespective of their age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership status, pregnancy/maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation to be in line with current Equality Legislation.
e. Seeking actively the views of residents, taking account of them and, whenever possible, acting upon them.
